TUNNEL SUPPORT CANOPIES

JTP Consulting provide consultancy and project management services for tunnel support canopies requirements.

The installation of multiple bores is an accepted construction method used as a temporary or permanent support structure for the installation of larger tunnels, box culverts and pipes.

Multiple bores are installed using auger boring or micro-tunnelling, across the roof and occasionally down the walls, encompassing the final structure.

Depending on ground conditions, the pipes may be installed with a 50 mm separation between pipe walls. Alternatively, in soft, flowing formations, the pipes may be clutched (attached) to each other during installation. By connecting the pipes there is no possibility of material falling from above the pipe canopy into the excavated tunnel with the potential of collapsing the surface structure.

The pipe canopy minimises the risk of subsidence above the proposed tunnel during excavation for the final structure .

Pipes can be used as a temporary support by filling with grout or used as a structural component by installing a steel reinforcing cage into each bore and filling with concrete.
